Bright’s monthly job opening analysis estimates 171,000 jobs created in April of 2013, many of which are in the ever-growing tech and healthcare industries. This is a slight decrease over last month’s job growth, but still an overall positive sign of recovery.

With a 3.8% growth in tech jobs since the beginning of the year, positions like Java Developer, Software Engineer, and Systems Administrator are in high demand. While the tech industry growth is happening all over the United States (even in surprising locations like Kansas City and Tuscon), it’s particularly strong in San Jose, Washington DC, Austin, and Raleigh—where the demand is quickly outgrowing the supply of talent. As a result, companies are looking to hire qualified immigrants, but the cap for FY 2014 H1B’s was reached within 5 days this year. In short, the increase in job openings may not significantly impact the overall unemployment rate if those positions can’t be filled.

The healthcare industry has also experienced high growth this year, and workers will find the highest job openings per capita in Houston, San Antonio, Kansas City, and Baltimore. As the general population maintains its need for healthcare services, Baby Boomers are largely driving up the need for additional healthcare professionals, and this industry will likely see continued growth over the next several years.
